Chapter Eight

Logan

“Where do you think we should start, exactly?” Irene peers over my shoulder at the map covering my entire dining room table. Working at the office could only get so much done and, with the office closed, it only made sense to get dinner and bring this stuff home so that we could work through the night.

“I’m not sure, exactly. If someone attacked your boyfriend, then maybe it’s someone who followed you here? A stalker, maybe?” I draw a few circles on the map of those shifters I know who haven’t responded to my calls. Whatever is causing this has hit almost every corner of the city and then some.

“Why would anyone want to stalk me? I’m not anyone special.” She shrugs, resting her chin on one of my shoulders. “But it seems to be the only thing that makes sense, given the timeline. Wesker didn’t mention any other shifters, did he?”

“We weren’t exactly on good speaking terms with him. He took off as soon as we let him go. After he tried stealing my bike.”

“Ooo, you have a motorcycle? We should compare engines sometime,” she purrs in my ear. I try to wave her off so I can concentrate but I can’t seem to keep my mind focused at the moment.

“Before or after you crashed into my car? Because I’m pretty sure yours is still a hunk of junk at the scrapyard, waiting to be fixed.”

Irene puts on her best pout.

“You haven’t fixed it for me yet?” She loops her arms around my neck. “And I thought we were good friends.”

“I wouldn’t say good friends. You haven’t even helped me out yet. And Mason doesn’t seem to like you very much.”

“Oh, she’s just jealous. Every girl’s jealous of me. They’re afraid I’ll take their boyfriends or something.”

“I’m not her boyfriend,” I correct.

“Is that so...”

“Irene, we need to focus.”

“Oh, it’ll still be there five, ten minutes from now. What you need is a break.” Irene kneads her fingers into the muscles of my neck and shoulders and I can’t help but lean back into her touch. Her expert hands seem to find every knot and ache that’s been lingering in my body all weak and take them away with each touch. An exhausted groan escapes me.

“There, there, you let it all out. Let Irene take care of whatever’s ailing you.”

“Irene, we really don’t have time for this.”

“To the contrary.” She leans in over my shoulder and whispers in my ear. “We have all the time in the world.”

I find my eyes slipping closed with each massage of my shoulders and neck, no matter how much I try to fight it. I must have been more tired than I’d originally thought.

“I have been working harder than usual. The last time I had a vacation was months ago...” The words feel heavy leaving my tongue, slurred together in a mess that I would be embarrassed to utter.

“Yes, you have. And after the accident, you’ve been doing everything you can to take care of me.
